i can’t wait to see more bakfiets in nyc. over the last year alone, there’s been a proliferation of shops selling dutch bikes and other urban/city bikes. while the racing and hipster crowd bemoan their existence, i am ecstatic!

The TV Series is 3 part documentary on cycling in Dublin. The main premise of the series will be to look at how a cycling culture can be developed in Dublin and what that might look like. To that end, one programme will be a kind of travelogue where we go on a journey from Dublin to Amsterdam via London by bike, ferry and train. We will follow Ciaran Fallon (the new Cycling Officer at Dublin City Council) on his journey as he meets various people involved in the cycling cultures of London and Amsterdam to see what is happening from a cycling perspective in those cities and what Dublin can learn from them.

Yesterday, the NYC DOT release it’s annual survey demonstrating an impressive 66%% growth in bicycle traffic in two years! Amazing! Now it’s time to improve two things – more bike infrastructure where lacking AND to get the NYPD to care about road safety. See you on the road.

with a new ride in the family, i’m interested in a lock i don’t see too often – the folding lock from OnGuard (top) or Abus (bottom). on the whole, Abus and OnGuard look like spitting images of each other, but i’m really wondering wondering how they stack up against the chain.

according to the british bike site, bikeradar.com, the Abus folding lock has three stars and the OnGuard isn’t rated. so how do these things stack up against the chain gang?

can you believe that they are going to start selling this bike at $550 in the USA? it’s a damn dirty shame that they are getting rid of the front internal drum breaks and dynos to shave off $400 from the price. USA’rs should wise up and realize that front dynos are one of god’s best damn inventions. every bike should have one.

I hope that choosing the bicycle as my preferred product needs little explanation or justification but my proposed ban on cycle helmets might be a little more problematic. For a long time I’ve harboured the suspicion in my more paranoid moments that there’s some kind of collusion between the road/oil lobby and elements of the cycling fraternity to ensure that cycling in Britain remains a marginalised, unpleasant and largely despised activity.

Mark says “Good cycling infrastructure is also possible in old streets. This street in Utrecht (Netherlands) was designed by Napoleon when the Netherlands were part of the French Empire in 1812. It was part of the ‘Route Impériale no. 2′ which connected Paris via paved direct roads with Amsterdam. The street design was changed several times in 200 years. It got the separate cycle paths that exist today around the year 2000.”

Right on. So, what did we learn from our fellow cosmopolitans in Amsterdam?

• Chain guards: cool ones exist, keeps your everyday clothes clean. no special clothing/accessories needed.
• Fenders: must have, keeps your everyday clothes clean. no special clothing/accessories needed.
• Bell: must have to keep your fellow humans aware. Being heard– one of the best ways to *avoid* trouble. (There’s a reason it’s legally required.)
• Front & rear lights: Being seen– one of the best ways to *avoid* trouble.
• Skirt Guard: for the ladies, for everyone, keeps all your longer jackets, rain ponchos, or skirts & dresses clean and avoids potentially getting them stuck and torn up into your rear wheel. no special clothing/accessories needed. (noneck’s note: my bike has a skirt guard and it’s great for when my partner, who does wear a skirt, sits sidesaddle on nights when she doesn’t have a bike.)
• Internally geared hub: low maintenance & reliable, all you need are a few gears for the low hills and bridges in this city. Yes, gears– keeps your ride easy and not a sweat fest… why ruin your awesome everyday clothes?
• Basket & rear rack: how else to simply bring food & drink to hang w/friends, carry your bag or purse, etc– say goodbye to the giant lame sweat spot on your back. no special clothing/accessories needed.
• Kickstand: protect your ride from dings & dents when you stop to hug to a friend.

Watch again and learn if you didn’t see all these points of bicycle wisdom… style over speed baby.
